Slough Town were undone by a ruthless first-half display from Torquay United as the Rebels fell to defeat at Plainmoor, despite goals from Jared Myers and Wiktor Makowski.

The match pitted two clubs with contrasting early-season form. Torquay came into the game with a 100% home record, sitting fourth in the table and unbeaten at Plainmoor. Slough, boosted by a midweek win over Chippenham Town, sat 16th but had shown encouraging signs with improved results over the previous fortnight.

Scott Davies made three changes from Tuesday’s victory: Reiss Greenidge, Dan Roth and Tyrique Clarke returned to the starting line-up in place of Kiki Oshilaja, Brian Nelson and Ruben Bartlett-Antwi. Seventeen-year-old Kian Berry was named among the substitutes.

Torquay thought they had the perfect start when Cody Cooke found the net inside the first minute, but the celebrations were cut short by the offside flag. However, the Gulls did not have long to wait. On eight minutes, Louis Dennis cut a low ball back from the left for Jordan Young, who calmly stroked home his fifth of the season.

Slough responded brilliantly within three minutes. Adam Desbois’ long kick was headed on by Jordan Greenidge, and Tyrique Clarke managed to stretch and find Makowski. The striker showed good awareness to slide the ball into Jared Myers, who slotted a precise finish into the bottom corner for his first goal of the campaign.

The Rebels’ joy was short-lived. From a corner in the 13th minute, Young’s delivery found Dennis leaping highest in the six-yard box to power a header past Desbois and restore Torquay’s lead.

The hosts were in irresistible attacking form, moving the ball quickly and stretching the Rebels’ defence. On 27 minutes, Dennis broke free down the right and fired a low ball across the box. Johnny Goddard, attempting to clear, inadvertently turned the ball past Desbois for an own goal.

Five minutes later, Torquay struck again. A quickly taken free kick released Dennis, who nutmegged his marker before squaring for Cooke to finally grab the goal his performance deserved, sweeping the ball home from close range. At 4-1, the Rebels looked in danger of being overwhelmed.

To their credit, Slough rallied before half time. They found a route back into the contest five minutes before the interval, when Desbois launched another long ball over the top. Makowski raced clear and kept his composure to lift the ball over James Hamon, netting his second goal since joining the club. In stoppage time, Slough nearly reduced the deficit further as Peter Ojemen’s well-struck volley forced Hamon into a flying save.

The Rebels trailed 4-2 at the break after a breathless first half, with all six goals coming in the opening 40 minutes.

Davies introduced Tyrese Dyce and Tarik Gidaree at half time for Ojemen and Greenidge as Slough looked to steady themselves defensively. The second half proved far less open than the first, with Torquay controlling possession and limiting Slough’s threat in the final third.

Young went close to extending the home side’s advantage with a low drive across goal early in the half, while Jordan Dyer’s header from a corner was cleared off the line. Desbois remained alert to deny Cooke from long range, but Torquay largely managed the game efficiently.

Slough struggled to fashion clear chances after the interval. A speculative free-kick from Davies cleared the bar, while substitute Jaiden Drakes-Thomas looked lively following his introduction in the 73rd minute. Ruben Bartlett-Antwi and Brian Nelson also joined the fray in the closing stages, but Torquay saw out the match with relative comfort.

The result leaves Torquay firmly in the play-off positions, continuing their strong start under Paul Wotton, while Slough remain in 16th place with nine points from eight matches. Encouragingly, the Rebels have begun to find goals from their forward line in recent games, with Myers, Makowski and Jordan Greenidge all opening their accounts this week.

Slough’s attention now turns away from the league, with a trip to Welling United next Saturday (13 September) in the Emirates FA Cup second round qualifying.
