Slough Town delivered one of their most complete performances of the season on Saturday afternoon, sweeping aside Chelmsford City with a commanding 5-0 victory at Arbour Park to climb up to 17th in the Enterprise National League South.

Following the frustration of Tuesday evening’s postponed trip to Bath City, the Rebels returned home determined to reassert the momentum they had built with four wins from their previous six league matches. Standing in their way were a Chelmsford side sitting tenth in the table, just two points outside the play-off places and arriving on the back of three consecutive victories, most recently a 1-0 home win over Tonbridge Angels.

Scott Davies made three changes to the side that had narrowly lost to Tonbridge the previous weekend, with Jaiden Drakes-Thomas, Jared Myers and Basil Tuma all coming into the starting XI. The changes paid immediate dividends as Slough produced an energetic, aggressive display from the outset.

The opening exchanges were physical and competitive, with both sides contesting second balls and territory. Chelmsford threatened early through Jamie Odegah, whose initial effort was blocked before Jason Adigun saw the rebound flash narrowly wide. At the other end, Myers was denied a promising breakaway after appearing to be caught by Adam Crowther, though the referee waved play on.

Slough began to take control as the half progressed, with Kiki Oshilaja producing a crucial piece of defensive cover to snuff out a dangerous Chelmsford counter before Makowski almost broke the deadlock on 18 minutes. Racing onto a loose ball from a Clarets corner, the forward showed great pace to beat the last defender and drive into the box, only to see his low effort rebound off the inside of the post.

The breakthrough arrived moments later. A sharp exchange of passes between Makowski and Tuma inside the area carved Chelmsford open, allowing Tuma to steady himself and guide a composed finish inside the near post to open the scoring and register his first goal for the club.

The match swung decisively in Slough’s favour on 28 minutes. Makowski was sent clean through the middle of the Chelmsford defence by Kiki Oshilaja's header, and was brought down clumsily by Crowther just inside the box. The defender was shown a straight red card, and Makowski stepped up to send Wright the wrong way from the penalty spot to double the Rebels’ lead.

With a man advantage, Slough turned the screw. Myers went close twice in quick succession, firing into the side netting after intercepting a loose pass before seeing another effort blocked following a sharp counterattack. Drakes-Thomas then tested Wright from distance as the Rebels kept the pressure on.

Slough were awarded a second penalty shortly before the interval when Tuma’s powerful run into the area ended with him being brought down by a helpless Chelmsford defence. Makowski again showed his composure, smashing his spot-kick into the net to score his 10th league goal of the season - and 16th in total - to make it 3-0 at half time and complete a dominant first-half display.

Chelmsford made a double change at the break in an attempt to stem the tide, but the pattern of the game remained the same. Myers blazed over from close range early in the second half, while Slough came close again from a succession of corners, with Oshilaja and Jacob Borgnis both threatening in the air.

The fourth goal arrived on 56 minutes and was the result of sustained pressure. Chelmsford failed to clear a free kick into their box, allowing Tyrique Clarke to regain possession and find Dyce centrally. The defender showed great composure to slot the ball home and further extend Slough’s lead.

Substitutions followed, with Goddard and Walker introduced to maintain the tempo, and the pair combined effectively to add a fifth goal on 69 minutes. Goddard’s driven ball into the box was palmed away by Wright, but only into the path of Walker, who reacted quickest to stab home at the second attempt.

Despite the scoreline, Chelmsford continued to show some spirit, forcing Desbois into a smart save from long range and threatening sporadically through Jett Murphy late on. However, Slough’s back line remained solid and impressive in dealing with late danger.

Makowski was afforded a deserved ovation when replaced late on, his two penalties having underpinned a superb all-round performance. The final whistle was met with deserved applause as Slough completed a comprehensive victory that underlined their recent progress.

The five-goal success lifts the Rebels up to 17th in the table, while Chelmsford fall to 11th, and provides another timely boost as Slough look to build further momentum in the weeks ahead.
