Slough Town earned a hard-fought point on a difficult night at the Snows Stadium as Reiss Greenidge’s outstanding second-half equaliser – his first for the club – cancelled out Christie Ward’s first-half opener for AFC Totton.
The Rebels arrived looking to respond positively after Saturday’s defeat at Worthing and made three changes, with Johnny Goddard, Reiss Greenidge and Dan Roth coming into the starting side. The heavy pitch immediately shaped the contest, forcing both teams into a more direct approach and making flowing football difficult throughout.
Slough actually began the brighter. Inside five minutes Wiktor Makowski held the ball up well and slipped Ruben Shakpoke into space on the edge of the area, the striker striking low but comfortably held by Ryan Gosney. Moments later Makowski himself was sent clear but opted to square for Shakpoke when a shooting chance looked more favourable, the opportunity eventually ending with a corner.
The striker remained heavily involved and was again released by Jacob Borgnis after an important interception in midfield, but Makowski dragged his shot wide across goal with the Rebels showing early promise.
Totton gradually settled into the game and produced their first real chance on 24 minutes, forcing a sharp reaction save from Adam Desbois from close range. The Slough goalkeeper was soon called upon again, saving Tyler Cordner’s spinning effort inside the box before tempers briefly flared following a strong penalty appeal from the hosts, an incident that resulted in Desbois receiving a booking for his protests.
Despite Slough’s encouraging opening spell, the hosts took the lead six minutes before the interval. Craig Tanner’s corner travelled all the way through to the back post where Christie Ward was unmarked, controlling the ball before driving a powerful finish into the far corner beyond Desbois.
Ward nearly doubled the advantage in stoppage time of the first half, firing narrowly wide after good work from Jaiden Bartolo, and Slough went into the break behind despite competing well for long periods.
The home side started the second half strongly and thought they had scored again early on when Bartolo found the net, only for the offside flag to intervene. Bartolo was then denied by an excellent Desbois save with his feet following a dangerous breakaway, keeping Slough in the contest at a crucial moment.
Scott Davies reacted before the hour with a quadruple substitution, introducing Luke Holness, Harvey Walker, Brian Nelson and Tarik Gidaree. The changes quickly had an impact.
Within a minute Slough were level. Greenidge collected the ball on the right side of the penalty area, beat his defender with clever footwork and, from a seemingly impossible angle, drilled a superb left-footed shot into the corner of the net to spark celebrations behind the goal.
The match then became increasingly physical and unpredictable. Totton made a series of changes of their own, but the turning point arrived on 73 minutes when Tony Lee was shown a straight red card after a lengthy discussion between the referee and his assistant, apparently for an off-the-ball verbal offence.
Slough looked to take advantage of the extra man and almost did so shortly afterwards. A long distribution from Desbois released Shakpoke, who unselfishly squared for Tyrique Clarke arriving in the area, but Gosney produced an excellent save to preserve parity.
Despite being reduced to ten men, Totton still carried a threat and Cordner fired narrowly over after good work from Ward. Slough responded with efforts from distance, Clarke testing Gosney again as the game opened up in the closing stages.
The Rebels pushed forward in stoppage time and earned a late corner, but neither side could find a winner and the points were shared after a competitive and committed encounter.
The draw leaves Slough in 15th place on 42 points, two behind Totton who sit one position above them in the Enterprise National League South table. Attention now quickly turns to Saturday when the Rebels return to Arbour Park to host 16th-placed Dover Athletic as they continue their push to secure a strong finish to the season.
