Slough Town’s final away game of the 2025/26 season ended in a damaging 5-2 defeat at Enfield Town, as a dramatic late collapse saw the hosts score three times in stoppage time to turn a finely balanced contest into a heavy loss.
The Rebels, backed by a strong travelling contingent, made a bright start in North London and looked the more threatening side in the opening exchanges. Luke Holness found space early on and picked out Johnny Goddard, whose effort drifted over, before the captain tested Joe Wright again moments later.
Slough continued to press, with Basil Tuma seeing a goalbound effort blocked after Enfield failed to clear their lines, while Harvey Walker’s pace caused problems down the flanks.
At the other end, Enfield offered glimpses of danger, with Billy Leonard heading narrowly wide from a cross and Nino Adom-Malaki testing Michael Edegbe from distance, but it was Slough who carried the greater attacking intent.
The breakthrough came on 36 minutes. After Walker earned a free-kick in a dangerous area, Goddard delivered into the box and Erion Zabeli was left unmarked to tap home and give the Rebels a deserved lead with his first goal for the club.
Slough looked comfortable heading towards the break, but Enfield responded after the interval. Within seven minutes of the restart, the hosts drew level as Adom-Malaki’s long throw was flicked on and finished by Leonard from close range.
The game opened up thereafter, with both sides pushing for a second goal. Slough created opportunities from set-pieces, with headers going narrowly wide, while Enfield threatened on the break.
Changes came from both benches as the match entered its final stages, and Slough continued to look the more likely to edge in front, with Jaiden Celestine-Charles seeing efforts blocked and Drakes-Thomas probing from midfield.
However, the momentum swung dramatically in the closing stages. With 11 minutes remaining, Enfield took the lead as young substitute Josh Efobi was on hand to convert from close range after Slough failed to clear their lines, scoring his first senior goal in the process.
The Rebels responded well and found an equaliser on 87 minutes. Drakes-Thomas was brought down inside the area, and Goddard stepped up to confidently dispatch the penalty high down the middle, setting up a tense finale.
At 2-2, Slough pushed for a winner and nearly found it, but Drakes-Thomas saw a low effort saved as the game entered stoppage time.
What followed was a disastrous end for the visitors.
Enfield regained the lead in the 90th minute, with Hayden Bullas finishing from the centre after a sweeping counter-attack, despite Slough appeals for a foul in the build-up.
The hosts then capitalised on a stretched Slough side, adding a fourth in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Bayley Brown finished from close range following another attack down the channel.
Moments later, the scoring was completed when Adam Thompson reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner to fire home Enfield’s fifth, sealing an emphatic result that did not reflect the balance of the game for long periods.
It was a harsh outcome for Slough, who had been the better side in the first half and were level heading into the closing minutes, but ultimately paid the price for a chaotic and costly finish.
The Rebels will now look to regroup ahead of their final game of the season at home, aiming to end the campaign on a positive note after a difficult run of results.
