Slough Town suffered a frustrating 3-2 defeat at Arbour Park as Tonbridge Angels claimed back-to-back league victories in an entertaining Enterprise National League South contest.

Coming into the game on the back of four wins from five — including last weekend’s outstanding 3-0 victory at Hemel Hempstead Town — the Rebels made the perfect possible start. Just 60 seconds were on the clock when Wiktor Makowski latched onto a long ball that the Angels failed to clear, finishing neatly beneath Laurie Shala to send the home supporters into early celebration.

However, that lead was short-lived. Slough were forced into an early change when Ruben Shakpoke was unable to continue, Basil Tuma entering the fray after just seven minutes on his return from suspension. When play restarted with a Tonbridge Angels corner, Noah McCann rose highest to head beyond Adam Desbois, levelling the scores before Slough had a chance to settle.

Slough responded well, enjoying spells of possession and going close through corners and combination play involving Tuma and Johnny Goddard.

Tonbridge edged ahead on 34 minutes, capitalising on defensive uncertainty. Frankie Baker showed determination to fend off Oshilaja before laying the ball into the path of Tom Leahy, who finished calmly from 12 yards.

Slough’s response was immediate and impressive. A well-worked move down the right saw Clarke feed Borgnis, whose pass found Makowski in space. The forward delivered an excellent ball into the centre, where Oshilaja headed in off the post to draw the Rebels level once more.

The hosts almost took the lead again before the break as Makowski closed down Shala’s clearance, the ball rebounding back towards goal but drifting narrowly wide. At half time, honours were even at 2-2.

Slough began the second half positively, playing into the wind and pushing Tonbridge back. Goddard fired wide early on, before Makowski powered a header just over the bar from Harvey Walker’s inviting cross — a chance that could easily have swung the contest.

As the game entered its final stages, Tonbridge struck the decisive blow. Kyle Smith showed great persistence down the right flank, keeping the ball in play before advancing into the area and pulling it back for substitute Bunmi Babajide, who rifled an unstoppable effort into the roof of the net from an acute angle.

Slough threw bodies forward in search of an equaliser and came agonisingly close in stoppage time. Dyce reached the by-line and cut the ball back perfectly for an unmarked Clarke, but his guided effort drifted inches wide of the far post.

Despite the disappointment of defeat — which dents Slough’s recent momentum — the performance once again showed the attacking threat and resilience within the group. Tonbridge, meanwhile, make it consecutive wins and climb to 15th in the league standings.

Slough are next in action on Tuesday evening, travelling to Somerset to face Bath City as they look to quickly bounce back.
