A severely depleted Slough Town side were beaten 4-1 by Chesham United at The Meadow, as a devastating spell early in the second half saw the hosts take control and secure all three points.

The Rebels, once again forced to rely on a mix of senior players and academy prospects, battled gamely but were ultimately undone by a ruthless Chesham side who capitalised on their momentum after the break.

With injuries and absences continuing to mount, Slough arrived in Buckinghamshire without several key figures. Goalkeeper Alfie Marriott had been recalled by Watford, leaving Michael Edegbe to deputise once more, while a host of first-team regulars – including the suspended Kiki Oshilaja – were unavailable. The bench featured several young players, including goalkeeper Bob Honey, who would later make his senior debut.

The hosts started brightly and nearly took the lead inside six minutes when captain Callum Adebiyi struck the crossbar from close range following a set-piece.

Chesham’s early pressure told soon after. On nine minutes, Alex Lafleur found space at the back post to convert, his effort taking a deflection on the line before nestling into the side netting to give the Generals a deserved lead.

Slough struggled to find rhythm in the opening stages but gradually grew into the contest, attempting to build through midfield and utilise the pace of their forward line. However, clear-cut chances were limited.

At the other end, Chesham continued to threaten. Mitchell Weiss came close midway through the half, seeing a powerful effort tipped onto the post by Edegbe, who produced a string of impressive saves to keep his side within touching distance.

The Slough goalkeeper was called into action again on 35 minutes, producing a superb fingertip save to deny Kai Yearn’s header, before Yearn was thwarted once more moments later as he attempted an audacious flick over the advancing keeper.

Despite Chesham’s dominance, Slough remained just a goal behind at the interval, with the game still finely poised.

However, any hopes of a second-half response were quickly extinguished by a blistering start from the hosts. Within minutes of the restart, Chesham doubled their lead. Yearn broke free down the right and delivered a low ball into the area, where Jayden Bennetts showed composure to beat his man and fire in off the post.

The Generals struck again almost immediately. A rapid counter-attack saw Yearn once more at the heart of the move, slipping Weiss through on goal, and the midfielder calmly lifted the ball over Edegbe to make it 3-0.

Slough barely had time to regroup before the hosts added a fourth. Weiss grabbed his second of the afternoon with a clinical finish, rifling the ball beyond the goalkeeper to cap a devastating seven-minute spell that effectively decided the contest.

To their credit, the Rebels continued to battle and looked to respond. Jaiden Drakes-Thomas forced a smart save from Ben Goode shortly after the hour mark as Slough enjoyed a brief spell of pressure.

Both sides made changes as the game progressed, with Slough introducing Kian Berry, Pedro Sami and Jeddiah Appiah to gain valuable experience, while Chesham rotated their attacking options.

Slough were rewarded for their persistence on 78 minutes when Tyrique Clarke produced a well-taken finish. Showing neat footwork inside the box, he created space for himself before firing into the far corner to reduce the deficit.

Late in the game, attention turned to a significant moment for the visitors as young goalkeeper Bob Honey replaced Edegbe to make his senior debut. The academy prospect was quickly called into action and impressed, producing a fine diving save to deny Chesham a fifth goal in the closing stages.

Despite that bright moment, Slough were unable to mount any further comeback, and the hosts saw out the game comfortably to secure a convincing victory.

It was a difficult afternoon for the Rebels, who were ultimately punished by a clinical Chesham side during a decisive period early in the second half. However, there were positives to take in the form of valuable minutes for several young players, as well as another goal for Clarke.

Slough will now look to regroup ahead of their remaining fixtures, with the hope of welcoming back key players as they aim to finish the season strongly.
