Slough Town were beaten by newly promoted Farnham Town in their first home fixture of the 2026/27 National League South season, with Trae Cook-Appiah’s first-half goal proving enough to secure the visitors’ first points at Step 2.

The Rebels improved significantly after half time and created a number of opportunities to equalise, but Farnham goalkeeper Michael Eacott and some determined defending kept Slough at bay.

Slough had been forced to wait for their home opener after the postponement of the scheduled visit of Ebbsfleet United, meaning Saturday’s trip to Dover Athletic had been their first competitive fixture of the campaign. That ended in a dramatic 5-3 defeat.

There were three changes to the starting XI from Saturday, with Chris Francis and Shay Spencer coming into the side alongside new loan signing Freddie Taylor, who made his Slough debut.

The Rebels made a positive start and won an early free-kick when Luke Holness was brought down just outside the Farnham penalty area. Jaiden Drakes-Thomas took the resulting set piece, but the effort was well blocked by the visitors’ defensive wall.

Farnham responded with a spell of pressure and created a couple of half chances in quick succession. A left-footed effort from Freddie Taylor was blocked before he stood the ball up towards Cook-Appiah, whose header down found Jack Dean, but the Farnham midfielder’s volley was deflected behind.

With neither side able to create a clear-cut opening, the match remained finely balanced during the opening 20 minutes as both teams continued to try to work each other out.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute, however, when Farnham took advantage of a turnover in midfield.

Cook-Appiah was able to race away from the Slough defence and, after opening up space against Keenan Quansah, produced a superb finish, driving a fierce right-footed effort across Josh McNamara and into the far corner.

The former Rebel’s strike gave Farnham a 1-0 lead and left Slough needing a response.

They almost found one immediately. Jared Myers showed neat footwork inside the Farnham penalty area to create an opening for Drakes-Thomas, but his effort flew over Eacott’s crossbar.

Slough continued to look for an opening as the half progressed, with Myers increasingly finding space and the hosts attempting to work the ball into the final third.

Farnham remained a threat on the counter, though, with Cook-Appiah continuing to provide an outlet. In the closing stages of the half, a corner from Slough was met by Francis, but his header went comfortably wide.

The visitors then almost doubled their advantage in added time. Cook-Appiah embarked on another lengthy run before cutting inside and striking a left-footed effort towards goal, but McNamara reacted well to make a low save and keep Slough within one goal at the interval.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, Bobby-Joe Taylor got forward down the right and cut the ball back to Billy Clifford, but the former Slough midfielder blasted over from around 15 yards.

The Rebels then produced their clearest spell of pressure of the match. Myers found space and got an effort on target, but Eacott reacted brilliantly to palm the ball away.

Farnham were increasingly being forced back towards their own penalty area, while Slough's pressure also brought a succession of corners.

Clifford then tested McNamara from distance at the other end, forcing the Slough goalkeeper into another fine diving save.

Slough continued to press and came close again when Myers produced some good movement before delivering towards Arthur Gregory in the centre, but the full-back could only head over the crossbar.

The visitors made their first substitution in the 55th minute, replacing goalscorer Cook-Appiah with experienced striker Rakish Bingham.

Five minutes later, Farnham made another change, with Sam Evans replacing Sam Hutchinson. Slough also made their first alteration as Johnny Goddard replaced Keenan Quansah.

The changes did little to alter the pattern of the match, with Slough continuing to see plenty of possession and trying to find a way through Farnham’s increasingly compact defence.

Indeed, Farnham almost added a second on 63 minutes. Evans played Bobby-Joe Taylor through on goal and McNamara produced one of the saves of the evening, getting a fingertip to Taylor’s low driven effort and diverting it inches wide of the post.

From the resulting corner, Taylor exchanged passes with Bingham before firing a close-range effort over the bar.

Slough responded with another change, Ruben Shakpoke replacing Holness in the 64th minute.

The Rebels continued to push forward, with Goddard and Drakes-Thomas combining neatly before the latter’s effort went high and wide.

Slough continued to dominate possession and territory but were struggling to find the decisive moment in front of goal. Their best opportunities had increasingly come from good build-up play and second balls, but Farnham’s back line continued to block efforts and defend crosses.

Donovan Chislett acknowledged afterwards that Slough had not been ruthless enough in the final third.

“I thought it was an outstanding performance,” the assistant manager said. “In football sometimes the performance doesn't give you the results.”

Chislett felt the first half had been relatively even, but believed Slough had taken control after the interval.

“In the second half I thought we completely dominated the game,” he said. “We made good inroads, spent a lot of time in their final third.”

He praised Slough’s counter-pressing and positional play, but admitted that the final stages of attacks needed to be better.

“I think where it could have been better was our decision-making sometimes in the final third and maybe just being a little bit more ruthless in the final third,” he explained.

The closing stages became increasingly stretched as Slough committed players forward in search of an equaliser.

McNamara was called upon once more when he raced from his goal to deny another Farnham opportunity to seal the points on the break.

Taylor curled a ball through towards Owen Dean, who was played in behind the Slough defence, but McNamara came out to smother the effort.

Slough continued to press in the final minutes, with Myers, Drakes-Thomas and Walsh all involved as the Rebels tried to create one final opening.

A late move saw Myers drive towards the far touchline before Slough worked the ball back into the attacking third, but Farnham were able to defend their advantage and clear their lines.

The final whistle confirmed Farnham’s first National League South victory, with Cook-Appiah’s 24th-minute goal separating the sides.

For Slough, it was a second defeat in the opening two matches of the campaign, although the performance after half time provided encouragement.

Chislett also highlighted the contribution of the new arrivals, with Taylor making his debut without having trained with the squad and Francis and Spencer making their first starts.

“Freddie Taylor's come in for his first game. He hasn't even done a session with us. I thought he was really good. A lot more to come from Freddie,” he said.

The assistant manager also praised the developing spirit within the squad, with several players still adapting to their new teammates.

“The more they're with us, I feel like the more we'll grow,” he added.

Despite the positives, Chislett was clear that the result remained disappointing.

“Football is about winning,” he said. “We're not happy. We haven't picked up points, but we're happy that we're moving in the right direction.”

Slough now have the opportunity to turn that encouragement into points when they travel to Hampton & Richmond Borough on Saturday.
